What Is License Activation?
License activation is the step that registers permitted use of a license on a device. It is separate from issuing the key and from simply checking whether the key is valid. Activation applies the configured device and access rules before granting the application the corresponding evidence.
Issue, validate, activate
Issuance creates the license record and its rules. Validation checks a presented key against applicable conditions. Activation additionally applies device registration and limits. A checkout payment is yet another step: PermitCore issues paid Store licenses after verified provider evidence, not merely because a browser displays a success page. Keep these transitions distinct in the integration.
Treat the response as a contract
Only grant the access described by a successful response for the expected license and context. Handle expired, revoked, limited or otherwise rejected responses directly. Do not substitute a previous success for an HTTP rejection. Use the documented SDK lifecycle rather than interpreting every network or parsing error as permission to continue.
Reactivation is not always a new seat
A known node-locked device can reactivate without consuming another device seat under the configured rules. A new device is a different case. PermitCore distinguishes same-device reactivation from a new activation in its usage accounting. Test both paths at the per-license device limit and the hosted activation-pool boundary instead of assuming they increment the same counters.
Build a supportable device lifecycle
Customers replace hardware and reinstall systems. Offer the protected customer device-removal flow where appropriate, then activate the replacement using the correct identity. If you also support offline use, verify the signed proof and its deadline. A local activation screen should explain what happened and how the customer can recover without revealing platform management credentials.
Common questions
Does validating a key consume an activation?
Validation and activation are separate operations. Use activation when the integration needs device registration; use the documented response and limits for that operation.
Does generating a random key activate software?
No. A random string is not an issued PermitCore license and has no server-side entitlement until the appropriate record and rules exist.
Can a payment success page grant access?
Browser success alone is not payment authority. Paid Store fulfillment requires verified provider evidence and subsequent license processing.
